Triple Fantasy

Kelsall one-ff 35ft Trimaran MOCRA Rating: 1.253 Wt:1760 Kg

Triple Fantasy

Triple Fantasy Build:
Rob James description: "35ft small hulled, kelsall built vessel with generous rig".
(Weighs approx 1.5 tons all up).

Terry Cooke built TF, first raced in 1982, built from 1980 with designer Derek Kelsall.
Believed built at Burnham on Crouch

Originally it had a standard main and wheel steering, plus two dagger boards forward and aft.

Note; Second set of hulls built (1980?) and sent to France where decks and deckhouse fitted.
TF was shortened to 35ft from 39ft to enter OSTAR. French sister-ship 39ft long, same width at 30ft. Now being rebuilt. (2005/6)

Dagger board replaced 1985
Boom replaced in 1987
UK Sails made new 2005 based on Dragonfly 920.

1982 Round the Island Race:
1982 Trimaran first in Round the Isle of Wight Race on overall handicap (Terry Cooke). Elapsed Time 6h 1m 23sec (still 44th quickest to date 2005).

“1982 being a Round Britain Race year saw a dozen more multihulls competing in the RIR, the 53ft Phil Morrison tri Exmouth Challenge sailed by Mark Gatehouse shot round knocking 43 minutes off the record to establish a time of 4hours 47 minutes, Terry Cooke sailing the 35ft Kelsall tri Triple Fantasy took handicap honours. The year was also the last time the multihull fleet started after the rest of the fleet, Quest the 54ft Weychan tri having a collision with a small monohull while tacking out through Hurst Narrows.” (MOCRA)

1984 Three Peaks:

Triple Fantasy, an ex OSTAR entrant (suggests pre 1984 OSTAR entrant!) and known to be one of the fastest trimarans in the UK could, if sailed well, set new records for the race. Triple Fantasy also had difficulty getting in, and in anchoring offshore to await favourable conditions, Derek Connors trapped his thumb and it was severed above the top joint. He was taken off to hospital, and they retired. To this tale of woe can be added that several boats went aground and that each crew had their own battle to fight in what became Force 9 conditions.
Time record for held for 12 years. (MOCRA)

1988 May LA TRINITE SUR MER
Class 2 was also divided into two groups, Chaffoteaux Et Mourry as the sole Formula 40 in one, and all the performance multihulls except the micro multihulls in the other. This included the Formula 28’s which have proved very popular in France but have not caught on elsewhere. The sole British entrant in this class was Peter Hopps’ Triple Fantasy, which was doing this event as part of her preparation for the CStar.
The course as set was 45nm, but with high pressure settling into southern France the shorter course was quite welcome some six hours later. The only boats that finished anywhere near us, were the Newick tri with whom we had had a great race and Orco, a micromultihull foiler tri who had started with us. We won our class by 32 minutes. Triple Fantasy had had equal success winning her class on elapsed time.
